At the beginning of time, there were only two types of beings: Elder Gods and a Single Entity. A Single Entity gained powers by drawing them from the Elder Gods. The Elder Gods declared war on the One Entity to save themselves. Eventually, the Elder Gods created 6 weapons called Kamidogu. When they used the tools, the Single Entity split into many parts, but the consciousness of the Entity survived. Kamidogu were lost in 6 parts of a Single Entity. These parts became Realities, and life began to develop in them. There are 6 main Worlds in total: the Earthly Kingdom, the Underworld, the Outer World, the World of Order (Seido), the World of Chaos and Edenia. Everyone has a Kamidogu that contains the essence of this world. The Elder Gods decreed that the inhabitants of one World can conquer another only by winning ten consecutive victories in the Mortal Kombat tournament. Later, Kamidogu was abducted by the Dragon King, Onaga, the "Emperor of the Outer World", who was overthrown by the current emperor of the outer world, Shao Kahn.
For a long time, Emperor Onaga ruled the Outside World. Onaga was the first emperor of the Outside World to unite disparate regions into one empire. He began to conquer other realities, attaching them to the Outside World, and adding territories and power to his Empire. The secret of Onaga's military victories lay in his invincible and almost invulnerable army. Onaga's heart allowed him to resurrect the dead, so he could resurrect dead soldiers over and over again. Onaga wanted to live forever using the last dragon egg. His priests cast a spell that will transfer Onaga's spirit into a tiny dragon and with this he will receive eternal life. It was at this moment that Shao Kahn, who was Onaga's advisor, decided to strike. Onaga was poisoned, and Shao Kahn seized control of the Outside World. However, unlike Onaga, Shao Kahn proved unable to rule the Outside World as a united empire. There were riots everywhere, chaos and disorder. Like Onaga, Shao Kahn decided to expand his domain at the expense of the conquered worlds. He attacked and conquered many small worlds, slowly consolidating his power over the millennia. Finally, he accumulated enough strength to annex a kingdom of the same size as the Outside World, Edenia, to his empire. In order to capture Edenia, Kahn had to win a sacred tournament, and if successful, he would receive the right to unite the two worlds. Despite all the efforts of the best warriors of Edenia, Kahn won and Edenia was conquered. The rightful ruler of Edenia, King Jarrod, was killed, his queen Sindel became Shao Kahn's wife, and their daughter Kitana was raised by the Emperor. Sindel couldn't bear the thought of becoming Kang's wife and committed suicide.
Some time after the creation of the worlds, the protector god of Edenia, Argus, and his sorceress wife Delia had children: Taven and Dagon. Delia could see prophecies regarding the future. One of the events she saw during her visions was the total destruction of all worlds as a result of the appearance of too many strong warriors. The Elder Gods demanded that the universes be protected from destruction and assigned the task to Argus and Delia. Delia predicted that the battle would reach its climax in a crater in Edenia, among the ruins. Argus ordered the construction of a pyramid inside the crater, while Delia created a fire elemental named Blaze. Blaze contained enough power to stop the warriors. Argus wanted all the warriors to be destroyed, but Delia wanted a less harsh solution to the problem: to take away all the warriors' powers. They decided that they would send their children to compete with each other, and the winner would take the place of the new defender of Edenia. On the way to battle Blaze, each of the brothers will need to get a sword from one of their father's temples in the Earthly Kingdom and armor from one of their mother's temples, also in the Earthly Kingdom. One of the armors can destroy all the warriors, the second can deprive them of their powers. In fact, this contest will be like a game of heads or tails between Argus and Delia, randomness will decide what happens to the warriors. The brothers were summoned to the palace in Edenia, where they fell into Argus' trap and were put to sleep. They were both placed inside the mountains in the Earthly Realm, and Dragons were assigned to guard them. Taven was guarded by the Golden Dragon, Orin, and Daigon was watched over by the Red Dragon, Caro. When Blaze gives the signal, the dragons will have to wake up their charges, and the competition will begin.
The Elder Gods watched over the Worlds and ruled them with untold wisdom, but one of the Elder Gods, known as Shinnok, succumbed to greed and illusions of boundless power. He wanted to get a new reality of Earth for himself, but the Elder Gods appointed the young thunder god Raiden to protect the Earth. The battle between Raiden and Shinnok was fierce and nearly destroyed the Earth, plunging the planet into centuries of darkness. Raiden found out that Shinnok had entered reality using a magical amulet. The amulet allowed to weaken the boundaries of reality and enter it without holding a tournament, and it also did not allow the Elder Gods to interfere. Forced to choose between destroying the Lizard race living on Earth or defeating Shinnok, Raiden chose the latter. Raiden stripped Shinnok of his amulet and, with the help of the Elder Gods, threw Shinnok into the Underworld. Raiden buried the amulet deep in the mountains of Asia and created a huge temple, appointing four guards. These guards represented the elements from which the Earth was created: Wind (Fujin), Earth, Water, and Fire. Shinnok will be imprisoned in the Lower World for exactly as long as the Amulet will be on Earth.
Several millennia later, after conquering Edenia and many other worlds, Shao Kahn finally began planning to take over the Earthly Kingdom. He sent Shang Zong to seize control of the Shaolin Monk Tournament and turn it into a competition between the best fighters on Earth and the Outside World. Rayden sent the best fighters on Earth to the White Lotus Society, an organization created to raise a new champion for the tournament every 50 years. The great Kung Lao was one of those warriors. He defeated Shang Zong and became a Great Champion. Lao held this title for only one generation and was killed by Tsong's new ally, a prince and heir from the Shokan race named Goro. Goro won the next 9 tournaments, thus bringing the Outside World as close as possible to capturing the Earthly Kingdom.
